Artists across the Johnson campus have been sending in their genres of pieces to the Scholastic Art & Writing competition. Over the break, 24 art students’ pieces were presented with “Honorable Mention”, 14 pieces with “Silver Key”, and 10 pieces with the “Golden Key” award.
These pieces varied from different kinds of illustrations such as animals and landscapes to mixed media self portraits, but they all worked to represent different aspects of their subjects.
“It was originally assigned be my teacher for 2D studio AP art and it was an assignment of doing an object with 9 different views so I thought about doing an animal to show kind of different views of an animal’s strength and so I chose a tiger,” junior Corey Webb said.
The artists were informed about the competition through their art teachers. These art classes assigned general topics to work on independently at home or at school.
“I did a tiger in 9 different perspectives,” Webb said. “They were different views of the tiger; full on face, side view or the body and it was in a grassy landscape, so the background was mostly green.”
Judges have the benefit of viewing the pieces without bias, however, there are a staggering number of entries to judge.
“Well, it’s basically a blind judging so they just see art and whether it should be mentioned, honorable mention, or whether you should get a silver key or a gold key. And I guess it’s harder than I thought it was. There was over like six hundred entries and on the list I think there was only 10 or 7 that got gold keys and I got a silver and a gold,” sophomore Neha Chaudhary said.
The selected pieces will be sent digitally to New York and will be further categorized and graded in their specific groups. The artists’ pieces will also be displayed at a ceremony on January 30th.
