With the year reaching its peak, Student Council will be starting its second round of projects. Some of the events include Soldier’s Angels, Teens for Jeans and Miles for Mallory.
Teens for Jeans is a fundraiser that helps the 1.7 million teens in America that are homeless, supplying them with jeans.
“So Teens for Jeans is sponsored by Dosomething.org and it’s just a nationwide drive for jeans because there’s over 1.7 million students each year that are homeless and that number is growing,” Student Council president Rachel Gawlik said. “So I am very passionate about it because I am a student and I can’t imagine how it is being homeless, I think that students helping students is a powerful thing so that is why we’re doing it.”
This is the first year Johnson is hosting Teens for Jeans and so far it has been quite a success, gaining already around 100 jeans. Student Council doesn’t set an average for how many jeans they want to acquire because when set goals are not achieved it feels like the team has failed.
“If you try to set yourself a goal sometimes you can be disappointed. And so for our first time to try a new project and fundraiser, any jeans that we can come up with, I think, will be a success,” Student Council sponsor Jennifer Jones said.
There are also great rewards that are given if certain goals are reached and the school accepts them. These awards for the Teens for Jeans fundraiser are 20% at Aeropostale, a private showing with The Vamps, and every student at Johnson will get a t-shirt that has the Teens for Jeans logo on it.
“It is until February 13 and for every person who brings a pair of jeans they get a 20% off at Aeropostale they get like a little card and also if it’s big enough, get a private concert from The Vamps, I don’t know who they are but they’re on the radio,” Gawlik said. “And also everyone in the whole school gets a t-shirt and I think that would be so cool to get a picture of everybody with everyone wearing the same shirt.”
Student Council has also invited the middle schools to help because the drive is accepting all sizes of jeans.
“We have also gotten local middle schools involved and we hope that they bring in a lot of jeans because they’re accepting all sizes,” Gawlik said.
These events are completely student run at school only with help from sponsors or some teachers.
“That’s the great thing about Student Council, it’s student run and so our president. She is the one who spearheaded this so she knows the details and my job is to house them in the back and that’s why it’s such a great thing. They’re the ones who are making it happen as far as the kids,” Jones said.
Some of the upcoming events include Miles for Mallory and a fundraiser for the Ronald Mcdonald House. These happenings will be held locally, on and off campus, for the community to donate towards the organizations and people.
“Miles for Mallory is coming up. It’s going to be a 5k run-walk. We are actually going to also have another big drive through the Ronald Mcdonald House,” Jones said.
