With many forgetful teens roaming the halls, it is inevitable that the school has a lost and found. Even though the school has a lost and found, some students don’t visit it to retrieve items they’ve lost, instead they just shrug and buy a new one. While this may be smart for old socks or gym bags with holes in them, it is not the best idea for perfectly good lunch boxes and water bottles that flood the lost and found. Students should go to the welcome center to claim lost items.
“If [students] come to the welcome center, to the right of me is the lost and found. It is in the storage room,” receptionist Pamela Garrett said.
Students who wish to visit the lost and found should ask Garrett. She will open the storage room up for them and allow them to look for the item or items they have lost. Although there is no designated time that a student can visit the lost and found, before school and after school are preferred times.
“[Students can come] preferably before school or after school. It is difficult between classes, because I am the only one up here, to be able to open the door to let them in,” Garrett said.
Students who may have lost an item towards the beginning of the school year can still find their items. Lost items are typically kept for the entire school year in hopes of being claimed. If the owner of the items has not taken them by the last day of school, the items will be given to donation centers.
“[We] usually [keep items] the whole school year. Twice a year we normally will email the parents and let the students know that we have tables out with items to come and look for, usually around Christmas time and then usually towards the end of the school year we will let them know to come and look again,” Garrett said. “After that it will be donated.”
In order to call attention to the growing size of the lost and found and encourage students to come get their items, emails are sent to parents informing them that there will be tables set out for students who may have lost an item. Items will be on display starting on May 17 in the foyer in an attempt to reunite lost items with their lost items. Students are encouraged to take a look at these items and claim the ones that may belong to them.
“We will set an email out to the parents letting them know if there is any lost items for the students to pick up to come look and also usually they will have an announcement on the intercom letting [students] know to come check for lost and found items,” Garrett said.
