Bus #44’s routine drive took an unexpected turn when pulling into the crowded bus loop Tuesday morning when it became involved in a collision with another bus.
“Allegedly, it was numbers 44 and 30. They think [the driver] released the air break and it coasted backwards into the other one,” A.P. Mitch Brown said.
Students aboard both buses were asked to write down their name, grade, birthday, and the seat they were sitting in. This helps the transportation office know who was on the bus, and ascertain that everyone is okay. When dealing with these incidents, transportation is notified.
“We let them know, and they send out an investigator and investigate it,” Brown said. “If there’s anything big we need to know about they tell us, but they didn’t tell us anything this time.”
Bus collisions aren’t garden-variety of accidents at Johnson. In the student parking lot it’s a bit more frequent, but fender-benders are quite scarce, according to Brown. He states that maybe 2,3,4 a year, that get reported. Policy differs for the instances.
“That goes to the police department. They handle all the traffic violations and stuff like that,” Brown said.
According to freshman Rebecca Pollock, the accident was a thrilling start to her high school experience.
“I thought it was pretty exciting, honestly. Freshman year, we got hit by a bus!” Pollock said.
