Student Council is putting together its final preparation for the fast approaching homecoming dance.
The game will be played against Roosevelt High School on October 15, the night before the dance, which will be held in the Johnson gym on October 16 from 8 to midnight. The ticket price is $20 for a single ticket and $40 for a couple. All grades are welcome, but if students who don’t go to Johnson wish to attend their date will need to fill out a form at lunch and see an A.P. to receive approval. There will be no tickets sold at the door, and school identification is required.
The theme dubs our dance the “Wonka Waltz.” Student Council vice president Stacy Rydell explains how they came up with the unique spin.
“We wanted something more fun and out-there than last year’s homecoming, and Willy Wonka is colorful and fun,” Â Rydell said. Â “Our goal was to turn our gym into the Willy Wonka factory. We took a lot of inspiration from the movie.”
Student response has proved very positive; and plans to attend are already in development.
“I’m definitely excited about homecoming,” junior Amanda Thomas said. “I have six mums. I think the theme is cute, and I already bought my dress, it’s pink.”
Spirit week, scheduled from October 12 to the 15, will also be built around the Willy Wonka theme. Each day will be designated to a character from the movie. Tuesday will be T.V Mike Day, dress up as a cowboy (no hats). Wednesday will be Willy Wonka day, wear crazy colors and patterns, Thursday is Oompa Lumpa Day and you will match your date or a friend. Friday (Spirit Day) will be Violet Beauregarde’s day – wear blue (includes temporary blue hair dye for the day).
The Jaguar Prowl is on October 13 at 6:30 , following the pep-rally on the track . Each club and organization has been asked to create a school-appropriate float. The floats must be solely human-powered, and no bigger than two bikes. There will be prizes awarded for the most creative, best special affects, most cheerful, funniest, best use of theme, and  Claudia Taylor Johnson’s favorite. If you are in the parade line up, will start at 6 near the softball field.
“I think the parade will be fun and it’s going to be cool seeing all the different types of floats.” junior Lauren Biggs said.
