Fingers tap on the wooden desk as Senior Kelly Hull runs through his band’s set one last time before the bell rings and he leaves to perform in front of a sea of people. Kelly shares a passion that only few understand fully. Kelly, along with a handful of other Johnson students, pursues the hobby and passion of making music and being in a band.
“Ever since I was a kid I loved music. I used to play guitar and in middle school I picked up drums and from there it’s all I want to do all the time,” Hull said.
This past summer, Kelly, along with Johnson seniors Chris Garza and Zach Holmes, went on tour with his band “All Who Defy” and experienced music in it’s rawest form.
“It’s the best feeling in the world. Playing shows, being on stage. I mean everyone has their thing that’s different. So my thing is performing. Going on tour is the best because everyday all you do is drive off playing music and meeting new people, you can’t top that,” Hull said
Dreams of being a rockstar aren’t quite the aspirations of the local musicians. Senior Jack Mcfarland has a few bands under his belt, and has no plan of leaving a room on his musical resume.
“I definitely know I’m going to pursue the arts. Acting and different things like music, things that make you think and do. I don’t care if I get super famous. I would much rather sit in a coffee shop playing music and watching other people play music, thats what people want. Like its always best when you can be up close and personal with music and the people who make it,” Mcfarland said.
In addition to the impact on the lives of the musicians themselves, fans also experience something more.
“I think local shows are better than bigger shows, by a long shot. The kids make music and do all of this stuff for the love of music, not for money or fame or anything, it’s purely passion, and that’s sick,” junior Joseph Bryant said.
“I look up to these guys, they’re icons and inspirations and what they do is incredible. They chase what they love and do all they can. Music speaks wonders, and guys like this, sing volumes,” Bryant said.
