For the second year in a row, on October 9, the Johnson tennis team has fallen just short of a win against the Reagan Rattlers. In a hard fought match the Jags lost 4-10 to their rival. With the loss, the Johnson Jaguars finished second in the district for the second year in a row. They are set to play the 5-time state champions the New Braunfels Unicorns second round of the Area Tournament.
This match was the main focus for the Jags this season. Considering that tennis matches are typically bare, this match was packed. For a lot of people, it was their first ever tennis match and it was a good one.
“It was pretty live, but it was really fun,” senior Sam Perez, said, “I would go to another match because it was fun and I liked watching our tennis team.”
One of the wins by the Jags was by the number 1 men’s doubles team which consists of senior Austin Cueva and senior Lincoln Lair. They won 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in a long, hard fought match against Reagan’s number one team.
“I was very proud with how our number one team played.” head coach, Sean Reno said. “In our most important match they came to play and came out with a well deserved win.”
The Jags mixed doubles team, Payton Gentry and Chuyang Guan, also won in a three set match. The score was 6-2, 6-7(4-7), 7-6(7-5), the last two sets ending in tie breakers.
“Our mixed team was a first time team,” Reno said. “It was their first match together and I was proud with how they played and how they won the match for us.”
The only women’s doubles match win was by the third line of Hailey Burgess and Montse Delgado with a score of 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
“Our lone women’s double match win was a tough one. They played very well against a tough Reagan team.” Reno said.
The only singles win was Johnson’s number one girl Chuyang Guan with a quick win of 6-1, 6-0.
“Our only singles win was from our former state champion, Chuyang Guan.” Reno said.
The season isn’t ending with the Reagan loss. This match did determine district seating, so the Jags will head to the area tournament to face off against Clemens and then the defending state champs, the New Braunfels Unicorns.
