The new year has arrived and resolutions are being put into action; everyone claims that 2019 is going to be their year… But, let’s be honest. We’re never going to stop binging shows on Netflix. Especially since they keeps pumping out pretty decent originals with attractive leads and mediocre acting.
So, without further ado, here are six Netflix shows you should be watching to start the new year right.
1) Supernatural: “Saving people, hunting things, the family business.”
I might be a bit biased, since Supernatural is one of my favorite shows, however, it’s the perfect series to binge. With thirteen completed seasons on Netflix, and a fourteenth one in the making, you could spend months watching Supernatural. It’s dramatic, albeit a bit depressing, and has its’ funny moments, which makes it a never ending emotional ride that keeps you on your toes. If you’re willing to sit through a slightly boring first season, you’ll find yourself satisfied and thrilled by the later episodes.
2) The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (TCAS) : “Who doesn’t enjoy a good scare every now and again? Especially this time of year.”
I’m going to be honest with you, this series surprised me. I was expecting a nice innocent show about a half witch who wanted to break free from tradition. And well, only half of my expectation was correct. While it is about a rebellious teenage witch, TCAS features extremely dark themes that should not be viewed by intensely religious audiences. However, if you get past that aspect, the show is a wonderful ride! There’s romance, humour, and drama within Sabrina’s hour long episodes. Although there’s only one season, another is in the making and it’s worth the binge.
3) Anne with an E: “It would be lovely to sleep in a wild cherry tree all white with bloom in the moonshine, don’t you think?”
Anne with an E is a very unique show. It’s based off of the book series Anne of Green Gables, and is in every way lovely. It’s set in the early 1900s and has a historical charm, but isn’t all just cute one liners and peculiar scenes. The show features a whole lot of angst and ROMANTIC TENSION. Like unbearable romantic tension that has gone nowhere in the past two seasons. It’s a fun show to binge and is a nice change of pace from your typical Netflix series.
4) Adam Ruins Everything: “I use facts to explain why you were wrong.”
This show is both hilarious and eye-opening, in a bittersweet way. Basically, the host of the series, Adam, reveals the truth about common beliefs and misconceptions. For example, an episode called “Adam Ruins Cars” exposes just how corrupt and monopolized car dealerships are, all based on solid facts and evidence. Although it’s’ hard to accept the truths being told in this show, it’s better then being kept ignorant and in the dark. Featuring two seasons and a third one in the making, Adam Ruins Everything is the perfect show to binge with its’ short 25 minute episodes.
5) Sherlock: “Dear god, what is it like in your funny little brains? It must be so boring!”
This is a story about a high functioning sociopath and a former army medic. The episodes honestly feel more like movies then episodes, since they’re all over an hour long, but they all connect together. Sherlock is a wonderful revamp of Sherlock Holmes and is displayed in a beautifully cinemagraphic way. If you’re into mystery and drama, this show is perfect for you!
6) Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: “You get to live your life the way you want. That’s the whole point of not being in a bunker. No one gets to tell you what to do.”
This show starts off on a dark note: three girls are saved from a bunker in Indiana where they were trapped and sexually assaulted by a pastor for fifteen years. And although you’d expect the series to be depressing in all sorts of ways, it’s mainly upbeat and funny. The show follows the story of Kimmy, one of the rescued girls, who is determined to live her life normally in New York city. Through bumpy roads and a lot of confusion, Kimmy is able to somewhat stabilize her life. This series is perfect for fans of comedies and people who enjoy short episodes and a fast pace.
