There are only two Saturday school sessions remaining before the end of the semester.
Saturday School is for students that have over nine unexcused absences from a class. This is so these students can still receive credit for the class instead of losing it due to absences.
“Every kid gets up to nine unexcused absences per class once you go over that. That’s when you owe time for the state law,” assistant principal Sandi Veliz said.
For every absence in every class, it will count as an hour being served during Saturday school. There is no max amount of hours that can be given.
“It depends on the absences of, you know what I mean? So if you have ten absences in every single class that’s seven classes, then that would mean you were over one hour in. That would be 7 hours,” Veliz said,
Saturday school opens at 8am and closes around 1pm, and students are required to be present for each hour.
It is held in the library, where students first need to sign in with a staff member. Students can bring anything they’d like to stay busy, including electronic devices.
“Students are encouraged to bring assignments or something to do. When you come in, you can’t come in and sleep or do nothing. So they’re encouraged to bring in, bring some work, etc.. Students can bring in electronic devices, they can complete schoolwork, they can bring a charger, they can bring a water bottle,” Veliz said.
The purpose of Saturday School is to assist students that have too many absences in classes so they don’t fall behind and end up losing credit for the class.
“It’s kind of like a safety net and a way to catch those kids that they can still get credit for. If they don’t, the administrator goes in and puts a denial of credit. So even if you have an A in a class, if you are under in attendance, it says ‘NONCREDIT’ you can’t get the credit until you’re meeting the attendance,” Veliz said.
“The state law says that students have to be present for 90% of classes,” Veliz said. “And so the purpose of this is to help students to meet that 90% law.”
