We are all familiar with the story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. What if the Wizard wasn’t exactly “wonderful”? The Broadway musical Wicked proves this idea true.
The play shares a story about Elphaba, or The Wicked Witch of the West, and who she was before Dorothy dropped into The Land of Oz. It also gives the viewer a better perception of what Glinda the Good Witch was really like. You get to see the witches evolve and turn into the characters you remember them being in the classic tale of Oz.
The production was beautifully preformed and artfully exhibited. There was a point where the lights went dark, and it was like being at a neon lights show.
They preformed familiar songs like “Defying Gravity”, which appeared in a Glee episode during the first season. The music will leave you singing to yourself about how “Popular” you wish to make The Wicked Witch of the West.
The dialogue made comic references to the original Wizard of Oz. There is also some more adult humor slipped into the play that left the audience giggling like little schoolgirls.
The play visited the tale in an entirely new perspective, compared to the original. It shows the influences behind the Witches, their origin, and an entire spectrum of emotions that defines the kind of people the Witches ended up being.
The music is memorable, the production is flawless, and it is a performance that cannot go unseen.
