The Jags sent their largest group of athletes to state this season and have had their best state finish in several events. Johnson set records as well as placed in the competition. The Johnson girls placed fifth overall at the meet, which was the Jags’ best finish.
“My strongest event is the 50 free, it takes a lot of skill and I practiced hard on being focused,” senior Nicholas Guillen said.
The Jags were led by senior swimmer Riley Marks, taking her second trip to Austin for the state meet. Marks qualified for four events including the 200 meter relay consisting of Marks, Briana Higgins, Raquel Grays and Taylor Silvestry, which brought home a bronze medal. They were Johnson’s first swimmers to win a medal at the state level.
“The hundred back was my strongest event because that’s what I placed highest in and practiced the most,” Marks said.
As for the boys, they were able to break many records as well. Nicholas Guillen broke a school record in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 21.61 for 11th place. Breaking another record in the 100 meter breaststroke and place 7th.
“My keys to success were a lot of practice and a lot of determination,” Guillen said.
The Johnson swim team had their best season and finished it off with a great run into state. For the Jags, the hard work they put in this season payed off. They were coming off an average year in district but proved they were a strong force in state. Next season is already looking promising after their state success.
“I think the team pulled together and helped me a lot, and they pushed me to do well and succeed,” Riley Marks said.
