Over the last few days, the boys and girls golf team have made history, sending five boys to regionals and finishing second in the tournament, topped off with the girls taking the district 26-5A title. The bar was set high for the team this season and they have met their high aspirations for the season up to this point, with a chance to shatter expectations at the state tournament.
“I’ve been telling the team that our goal for this year was to make the state tournament,” head coach Mike Martin said. “It’s been an expectation of ours since the school has been open.”
The boys tee’d off the regional tournament April 2 and got off on the right foot scoring 295, ending the day two strokes behind Reagan. Johnson started day two in second and had another impressive day, ending the tournament with an identical 295. The Jags ended the tournament with 590, which was good enough to take second and, more importantly, advance to the Region IV tournament. The boys placed second at the Region tournament which was, good enough to send them to State for the first time. The team was lead by junior Jake Judkins, sophomore Christian De La Cruz, senior Jake Boggus, junior Jake Goodman, and junior Jon Lucas. Preparations are being made for the tournament where Johnson will play with the best talent Texas has to offer.
“We are preparing by sticking to our routines and staying focused through practice, spending ample time on our short games as well as our course plans,” Martin said.
The Lady Jags have also had great success with their recent win at the district tournament. Opening with a 314 on day one, highlighted by a 71 posted by freshman Taylor Coleman and 74 by sophomore Nikki Long, a result good enough for second place behind Reagan at the end of day one. The girls concluded the event with a total of 619, edging out Reagan by six strokes for first place, and a bid for the regional tournament.
“I’ve been extremely pleased with our effort and determination lately. We’ve had real success this year, this is a great achievement for the boys, girls, and the program as a whole,” Martin said.
