Senior Christina Garcia has always been a fan of the conventional frozen treats during the dog days of summer. It wasn’t until last year, however, did she discover a new icy delicacy that could be debated as such. Garcia found the existence of the pickled snow cone.
“I was at Six Flags last year, and it was summer. I really like pickles so I was at the stand where they sell snow cones, and I was like, ‘Oh man,’ because they had pickled snow cones,” Garcia said.
Garcia was surprised to find that two of her favorite treats had been combined into one odd creation.
“They have these giant pickles that they just put in the snow cone and it’s just flavored with pickle juice and it’s just really good,” Garcia said. “It’s a sour taste, and it tastes like frozen pickles, which is pretty cool.”
The pickled snow cone is just one of the many favorite local flavors San Antonio has to offer during summertime. For those who are more content with the less eccentric frozen desserts, traditional ice cream is always a classic. Johnson students like their ice cream with a twist.
“Da Vinci’s Gelato is a really good place, anything ice cream based,” senior Alec Blount said.
Blount recommends Da Vinci’s Gelato Shop for its exquisite, Italian take on ice cream.
“It’s softer and sweeter, and it has more sugar [than normal ice cream],” Blount said.
Another local favorite is found within the numerous frozen yogurt shops most heavily populated by teenagers escaping the summer heat.
“I love frozen yogurt, I really do,” Blount said about Aspen Leaf’s strawberry flavored yogurt. “It’s cheap and delicious.”
Senior Mell Perez likes to buy her summer treats from an old childhood favorite, the neighborhood ice cream truck. For her, it’s not just for the ice cream, but for the nostalgia and personalities.
“So this lady has an ice cream truck and she drives by my house. Her name is Gracie and she’s [super] awesome. She has these mango slushies and they’re like real mango[s] and cream.” Perez said.
Perez looks forward for these mango delicacies all spring long.
“It’s made with real mango and it’s frozen and [original]. I love it,” Perez said.
For most students, the best place to get their frozen treats is from their local grocery establishments, such as Target and HEB.
“I could get a gallon [of ice cream] if I wanted to, and it’s nice and delicious and sweet and gorgeous and magical and glorious and intensely chocolate,” senior Drea Quinones said.
