Choir gains royal status

This year the theme for choir is London.

By Claire Carter| Staff writer

Madison Ersch wakes up every morning, jumps in the shower, and belts out a song from her favorite Disney princess movie. Humming through the halls students can hear her singing sweet melodies she just can’t get off her mind because she sings them everyday in her favorite class, choir.

“I joined choir because I love singing and in middle school I made some good friends through choir and I wanted to stick with it,” sophomore Ersch said. “My favorite thing about choir is the trips we go on because we just bond as a big family and we have a lot of fun.”

Choir isn’t just about the singing. A good singer needs the ability to listen as well.

“The fact that we are all super close does help because we are more comfortable around each other and more willing to listen and that is what makes us a good choir,” Ersch said.

A more experienced senior, Roland Rodriguez-Colon, shares on the publicity of the Johnson choir.

“We aren’t like the other organizations. Band and orchestra are much bigger than the choir, giving us the ability to grow closer with fewer people. Our concerts are really fun to put on, especially during Christmas and the Pop Show,” Rodriguez-Colon said.

Numbers don’t phase this group of dedicated performers. They still compete with pride and hope for new members in the future.

“Encore goes to perform at Tejeda and other middle and elementary schools in order to show the younger kids what we do to interest them and hopefully transfer our passion for choir and singing on to them. It’s almost our way of ‘recruiting,’” Rodriguez-Colon said.

Each year a group of elected officers, know as the choir council, chooses the theme that models the decorations of the choir room and shirt designs to help these singers get motivated.

“Our theme for this year is ‘London’ so our choir room is decorated with the London eye, a phone booth, the tardis from Doctor Who, Peter Pan characters, Abbey Road, and Big Ben. Making our motto obvious- Keep Calm and Sing On,” Rodriguez-Colon said.
