The “Lady Bird” Johnson High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) took home Runner – Up Championship in Precision Air Rifle category; a 3rd Place finish in Sporter Air Rifle category; and the Top Marksman, Precision Air Rifle category at the San Antonio Invitational JROTC Air Rifle Match this past Saturday.
Five of the nine Johnson air rifle marksmen qualified in their respective categories to shoot in the finals match. Cadet Major Duncan Pawloski, Precision Rifle Team Captain, posted the best individual air rifle score in the match with a top score of 673.4 out of a possible 700 points. The four other Johnson air rifle marksmen that qualified to shoot in the finals match with their final individual standing included the following: Cadet First Lieutenant Mirella Torres, #4 in the Precision Category; Cadet Private Nathan Reyes, #6 in the Sporter Category; Cadet Private Daniel Young, #8 in the Sporter Category; and Cadet Private Cristian Espinar, #8 in the New Shooter Category. The other four marksmen and their final individual standing were as follows: Cadet Corporal Max Pawloski, #11 and Cadet Corporal William Coulter-Porth, #12, both in the Precision Category; and Cadet Private First Class Richard Torres, #12 and Cadet Private First Class Harley Euler, #17, both in the Sporter Category.
The day of competition begun for the Johnson Jaguar cadets at 6:45 a. m. at the JROTC building for equipment loading and transport followed by their first of four match relays starting at 8:30 a. m. and concluding at 5:00 p. m. with the awards ceremony. The Precision Rifle Team earned a 2nd place finish by shooting a team score of 2,191 out of a possible 2,400 points—only 25 team points separated Johnson from the match champions. The Sporter Team earned a 3rd place finish by shooting a team score of 1,773 out of a possible 2,400 points—only 29 team points separated Johnson Sporter from the 2nd place team.
The Johnson JROTC co-hosted the event with Churchill High School and shared the responsibilities to operate a safe match as the Range and Safety Officers. Additionally, the JROTC Booster parents from both schools shared a concessions operation in support of all attending the first JROTC competition this school year.
