The Johnson golf team’s spring season is coming up and they will be coming off a strong finish to the fall season with the boys team ranked 4th in the state and the girls team ranked in the top 20. Living up to the high rankings after the fall season will be a tough task to accomplish, but the Jaguar golfers are up for the task.
“We are very excited for our final rankings, and we feel like it’s a tremendous accomplishment for the school and our golf program, however we need to have a strong finish in the spring season so we can be possibly the best team in Johnson history,” junior Christian De La Cruz said.
Senior Jake Goodman has received a scholarship to play golf at Texas A&M, making Goodman the first Johnson golfer to play at a D1 college.
“I feel that it is a tremendous honor to be able to play golf at the next level, especially at a school like Texas A&M. I’m excited for the opportunity,” senior Jake Goodman said.
The girls golf team is also playing well, with several high finishes in tournaments to end of the fall season. The last three tournaments the girls team played in, the team finished first, tenth and fifth. These were all highs for the team in the month of October.
“Finishing strong was always on our minds and we definitely wanted to try and carry over momentum from the fall season into the spring season,” sophomore Taylor Coleman said.
Regardless of the finish in the spring golf season, the Johnson golf program has taken a step up to a high level with having several top golfers in the state. The spring season looks to be promising as the Jaguars will begin play during February.
“I’m certainly ready as a coach for the season, and I’m looking forward to seeing how our boys and girls do,” Coach Mike Martin said.
