Mrs. Momin shows off her artistic treats

by Grey Burrell | staff writer

Sitting down in her desk, images of various dessert items are suddenly displayed to her U.S. History class. While this may not be the typical classroom environment, an idea began to form in junior Kristen Brunner’s mind.

There’s a new baking club being started up soon, sponsored by Nisha Momin, who has personal connections to this club.

“I love baking, it’s my outlet in life. I do teach so when I go home I love to bake,” Momin said. “It’s something that I don’t really have to think about. It’s fun, it’s theraputic, so to have that in a class where I can help out kids is the best part of this.”

“I hope kids learn how to not just make simple cakes, or simple desserts, but rather make more elaborate things and use it as a therapeutic outlet like I do. I really want to show them how to make healthy desserts and not just sugary things, so that’s something that I feel that they can take from this class and use it maybe when they go to college and so forth.” Momin said. “We’ve had a lot of boys and girls show positive feedback about this club, so we have a variety of students wanting to join this club.”

Brunner is the sophomore who coined the idea for the baking club in the very beginning, already being a fan of baking and quirky treats, took this to heart before starting up with this club.

“Mrs. Momin inspired me actually, I wasn’t thinking about starting it at all until she showed the class some of the cakes and pies that she had baked herself, and it really inspired me to start this club,” Brunner said.

Brunner has made goals for the club, hoping to join together curious bakers.

“Well, we just want to get together, have some kids from school that like baking and have a sweet tooth, and we want to make some good treats that we maybe didn’t know how to before,” Brunner said.

This club will have supervisors and organizers, and the club will be very much involved with events, and the school.

“We’re going to have a vice president and president for this club, not a bunch of secretaries and treasurers or anything, but just the main two to organize the meetings and events,” Brunner said. “I want this club to be fun, and I want other students to know that you don’t have to be a good baker or cook to join, it’s just something that I want for people to also learn life skills.”
