Debate Team brings home the gold

By Natalie Allen | Staff Writer

The forensic department is pleased to announce the success of the Johnson Debate Team in the recent MacArthur tournament.

“It put many of our kids on the verge of State qualifications,” speech/debate coach Barbara McCain said.

Sophomore Isaac Batt placed 2nd in Novice Extemp and Novice LD. Junior Sabrina Garza placed 2nd and freshman Rebecca Riggs placed 5th in Prose. Junior Sydney Scott placed 2nd in US Extemp and 3rd in Congressional Debate, while Senior Nick Thorpe placed in 3rd in Oratory.

“We have 4 different types of debate: cross examine, Lincoln-Douglas, public forum, and congressional,” McCain said. “They are all speaking events that [are concerned] with current news.”

Tournaments such as these prepare students for more rigorous competition.

“It’s a good experience for my beginners,” McCain said. “I encourage them to participate to enhance their skills.”

The competition that has the whole team eager to compete will be held at Texas A&M from November 18th to the 21st.

“We cannot wait for our big trip in Canyon, Texas. It’s like 500 miles away. We hope to take home the Sweepstakes Trophy at ‘The West T,’” McCain said.

McCain loves being able to coach the team, and hopes that the experience leaves a great impression upon her students.

“See, I didn’t have a Debate Team when I was in high school,” McCain recalled. “Not everyone is a musician or athlete. Some people just love to do this.”

The forensics team will take their winning passion to A&M this weekend.
