On Feb. 23 and 24 in the library seniors will have the opportunity to audition to be a speaker at graduation.

Students can audition to be the Master of Ceremonies or the Commencement Speaker.

“The first is Master of Ceremonies, which basically is the glue that holds it together,” senior class sponsor Megan Cobb said.

At graduation the Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and introduces guests. During the auditions on Feb. 23 students need a script, that they’ve been given, and a prepared Speech.

“Students need to write a short, welcome speech and of their own creation. And then there’s a script tryout part, and they’ve already been given that,” Cobb said.

During the auditions on Feb. 24 students will be auditioning for the commencement speaker.  Students will also need to prepare a speech for this audition as well, but the speech will be slightly different.

“The other opportunity is commencement address commencement address their speeches slightly longer. It’s about a minute to max,” Cobb said. “You kind of give inspiration and words of wisdom to move the class into the next phase.”

For both auditions students will need to bring four copies of their speech to give to the judges.

“What we’re looking for is clear pronunciation, confidence, projection. I mean, these students are speaking to 7,000 people,” Cobb said. “We’re also looking for what message they have to give to their graduating class.”

While graduation is a nice event for families it’s also a great event for students to watch and participate in.

“I think it’s important for students to get involved because this is the first step into their future,” Cobb said. “If they want to make it their own this is an opportunity for them to do so.”
