The two campus elevators are working now, but for a few days the main elevator was out of service.
“Anytime the elevators, especially the main one that goes to three floors is not working, that is a high priority for our campus so if it doesn’t work then they have to do their work in the libraries,” assistant principal Steve Berg said.
Along with the malfunction there has been a recent shortage of elevator passes which students are required to have in order to access the elevators.
“What we’re doing is, anybody who needs an elevator pass at this point that doesn’t have one issued to them,” school nurse Monica McCool said. “They are instructed to grab a teacher to have somebody badge them in.”
In an event where the elevators don’t work, the students who need them to get from floor to floor are instead moved into the library to complete their assignments.
“They were told that if they could not reach their third, third floor class, that they could go to the library, and that was counted as their attendance,” McCool said. “So they didn’t lose out on class attendance, and they have Chromebooks available for them there”
While there should typically always be one elevator operating, staff try to avoid a worst case scenario and accommodate students’ needs.
“In the event that both elevators were down, we would talk with administration and figure out a game plan,” McCool said. “We haven’t had an issue where both elevators have been down at the same time, so we haven’t had to address that yet, but we always find a place for students because we want them to be here.”
