Spurs look to hold off elimination while the Grizzlies aim to make history

By Zachary Cohen | Sports Editor

Two weeks ago, you could ask any Spurs fan what their biggest concern was, and they would talk making the best record in the league and having home court advantage for the Finals. Fast forward to present day, and those same fans are now hoping for the team to pull through and get out of the first round of the playoffs. The aging team from San Antonio entered the post-season with the second best record in the  league, and the number one seed in the Western Conference. They were tied for the best record at home during the regular season, but with the beginning of post-season, their current record started back at 0-0.

The Spurs’ first game was a shocking loss to 8th seed Memphis, 101-98. However, they rebounded three days later to tie the series up at one piece. On April 23, it was time for San Antonio to attempt to take the series lead for the first time. However, the Grizzlies proved to the Spurs and the league that they deserve to be in the playoffs against a quality team.

On Monday night, the Spurs stayed in Memphis for game four, and looked to even up the series 2-2. The Spurs failed to do this and they fell to the Grizzlies in embarrassing fashion, 104-86. The Spurs now face elimination if they can’t get another win. The next game will be an elimination game for San Antonio on Wednesday at the AT&T Center, the arena where the Spurs went 35-6 during the regular season. The Grizzlies will look to impress the world and become the first 8th seed to knock off a number one seed in four years; the last time a number 8 seed knocked off a number one seed was back in 2007, when the Golden State Warriors defeated the Dallas Mavericks.
