With summer finally here, it’s time to break out the swim suits and beach towels, grab the sun screen and blast the music. But, wait. What to eat? That’s where we come in. Here are some delicious, healthy foods to help quench the cravings this summer.
One of the big trends this year has been frozen yogurt, with stores popping up all over San Antonio. Frozen yogurt is an awesome alternative to ice cream when you want something cold and sweet. There are so many flavors, and you can top it with all kinds of things, but the best thing for you is a simple vanilla or fruity flavor topped with fresh fruit or granola, to help your digestive system, not to mention low in calories and fat. “My favorite thing to eat is frozen yogurt. I love all the options, and putting the different toppings on. To me, its just so much better than ice cream, it tastes good, and its good for you,” sophomore Dalia Nevarez said. Because there are so many stores around the area, you can find your favorite easily. The style of many frozen yogurt places, like Aspen leaf and Yogurt Zone, are self-serve. so you put as much or as little as you want, and you pay per ounce. This is a great way to keep it cheap.
To keep up your energy, make yourself a wrap with roast beef, lettuce, and any other veggies you want. Roast beef wraps are super easy to make yourself, or you can find them at restaurants like Jason’s Deli, where you have a good selection of different kinds of wraps. Roast beef is full of iron, which helps boost you energy up for a long period of time, instead of a short boost from caffeine.
To start your morning off right, oatmeal is a great way to zap hunger, and it does wonders for you digestive system. Pair it with some fresh berries for a sweet flavor that adds antioxidants. Another quick meal for those on the go is yogurt, like Yoplait or Activia, which you can buy by the cup, which saves money.
Feeling parched? Cool off with a luscious waterfall of fruit, commonly known as a smoothie. Smoothies are easy to make, as long as you have a blender. You can personalize it with any fruit, juice or yogurt that you want. Frozen fruit is only  a couple dollars at most grocery stores, and it lasts much longer than fresh fruit.  “I always get smoothies during the summer because they’re a good way to cool down, and there not as sugary and milkshakes and stuff,” Nevarez said. “Me and my mom like to make different kinds and experiment with different fruits.”
It’s not hard to find good food thats good for you, you just have to look. This summer, put down the Big mac, and pick up a healthy snack instead. You’ll look and feel great!
