On March 9th Disney released its latest action packed film, “John Carter”. The film stars Taylor Kitsch, who is best known for his portrayal of troubled high school football star Tim Riggins on NBC’s acclaimed television series “Friday Night Lights.” Kitsch has also starred in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” as the cajun mutant that goes by the name of Gambit.
“John Carter” is an action fantasy film about a civil war veteran named John Carter who mysteriously gets teleported to the planet Mars. Carter soon realizes that he is not alone on the planet and encounters tall, four-armed, green martians that take him prisoner. Once Carter escapes from captivity, he soon encounters a princess named Dejah (played by actress Lynn Collins, who also starred in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) who is in desperate need of help.
The princess and a friendly martian named Sola attempt to help Carter return home by traveling to the sacred river Iss. However, Carter, who was once a victim, becomes the hero by attempting to help the princess once she gets captured and is forced to marry an evil tyrant named Sab Than. “John Carter” is a great action/adventure family film. It is a unique film with multiple primary antagonists that add mystery, adventure, and flavor to the film. The style of the film and the special effects used makes “John Carter” feel like a combination of two other past box office hits “Star Wars” and “Avatar”. Overall, the viewing of “John Carter” was a pleasurable experience due to the versatility of the film. It contains fantasy, action, romance, and even some comic relief. At the end of the film there is a sly twist, which makes the film more enjoyable as a whole.
