With homecoming season on the horizon, students are anxiously preparing themselves for the jingle of the ever so obnoxious cow bells dangling from mums the size of Texas. This year, Student Council chose the theme “Dancing Through The Decades”, which will incorporate a wide range of different decorations.
“The theme is ‘Dancing Through the Decades’- it’s the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. It’s supposed to be really cool,” senior student council member Lindsey Kearns said.
‘Dancing Through the Decades’ is something completely different from previous years, as this year the Student Council officers went with “multiple” decades and tied them all together as opposed to the traditional movie theme.
“We’ve never done, like three different decades in one gym,” senior and student council vice president Kaitlin Hamilton said. “It’s always been one main theme. So we have several different things going on.”
Of course, since the population has grown immensely over the last year, student council realized the need for more space in order for students to enjoy the dance in a more spacious environment.
“I feel like we’ve outgrown the gym and I tell you what, people are out there you know, doing their thing- getting busy- but [it] was just way to packed,” student council sponsor and U.S. History teacher Jennifer Jones said.
After realizing that the gym was over-crowded, student council decided to try something new this year that fit in with the Dancing through the Decades theme.
“So at first we thought about just getting two dj’s and maybe doing one in the small gym and then the big gym or maybe one outside and inside,” Jones said. “Then we were like hey let’s try something completely out of the box. Let’s try a live band.”
With the addition of the live band, students can expect to hear a wide range of cover songs anywhere from old time rock n’ roll to modern pop.
“We’ve got a band coming in from Austin seeing as that’s kind of the music capital of Texas,” Jones said. “They do all cover tunes and so from, I don’t know Taylor Swift to Def Leppard to Darius Rucker and everything in between so hopefully that will be a cool addition in the courtyard.”
When students feel the need to satisfy their sweet tooth, another new addition will include a “malt shop” in the cafeteria for students to purchase a sweet treat.
“Something else that is going to be new is we are going to use part of the cafeteria and that’s going to be like a 50’s malt shop type of theme because with the dancing through the decades the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s and so we’re gonna sell like coke floats, root beer floats and then obviously water and gatorade so all of that will be a dollar, so still kid friendly prices,” Jones said.
This year, along with the additions, there have been other changes to the usual homecoming layout. Where there used to be a photo booth, it will be replaced with various cutouts and props for students to take pictures with their own phones.
“Normally we have a photo booth and this year we are not doing a photo booth but instead we are doing wooden cutouts,” Jones said. “People need to bring their own cell phones to take those pictures because we thought that might be more fun than having to wait in the really long line.”
Student council has also decided to make check in flow much smoother by having students check in on their phones this year.
“You will be able to get in and check in through woodstock, which is where the live band will be outside so you don’t have to go to the main gym to check in we’ll have two different ways to funnel so that should make check in a lot quicker also,” Jones said.
There are a few other surprises student council has in store for the students, however they are keeping them a secret until the night of the dance in order to try and increase ticket sales.
“We have a couple surprises but we’re trying not to let everyone know until the night of, but you’re gonna have to come to see them,” Hamilton said.
