Last week, the varsity basketball teams faced off against Brandeis on Jan. 22 and Roosevelt on Jan. 24, delivering performances filled with determination and learning moments.
“It was definitely tight,” sophomore Brianna Rodriguez said about the Brandeis game. “We were playing good defense and trying to stay in the fight. Our positivity as a team was strong, and we kept supporting each other.”
Despite falling short in certain areas, Rodriguez took pride in her more consistent shooting. “It wasn’t my best game, but my shooting was way better,” she said.
Meanwhile, senior Steven Ramos described the Roosevelt game as a high-energy success.
“We were up by 20, probably more,” Ramos said. “Coach told me to maintain the lead or run it up as much as we could. I got a steal and hit Max for a dunk he eagerly wanted—it was a great moment.”
Both players acknowledged the challenges of staying composed in the face of adversity. Rodriguez highlighted the need for strong communication, while Ramos focused on handling early-game struggles.
“Sometimes we come out a little slow,” Ramos said. “We just need a big highlight play to get the momentum rolling.”
Balancing academics and athletics remains a priority for both athletes. Rodriguez noted the long nights spent studying and finishing homework, while Ramos emphasized the importance of maintaining grades.
“Without the grades, you can’t play,” Ramos said.
As the season progresses, both teams are focused on growth, teamwork, and staying resilient.
“We learned to stay vocal, stay strong, and just be ourselves,” Rodriguez said.
With lessons learned and spirits high, the varsity basketball teams are looking ahead to future games, prepared to build on their strengths and continue pushing forward.
“It’s about being ready, staying positive, and having fun,” Ramos said.
