Johnson’s varsity softball team played its first district game this past Friday against the MacArthur Brahmas. The team has been readily preparing for the season with extensive practice hours and challenging tournaments at College Station and here in San Antonio.
The Jags came out strong with a 5-0 lead in just the first inning. The score stayed at 5-0 until the 4th inning, when the Jags piled it on with outstanding hits from the seniors on the team. Senior Tori Winton pulled on a strong double to get her teammates on the bases, while senior Jorden Smith knocked out a triple to send two Jags to home plate. Senior Geena Garcia quickly stole two bases, resulting in a final score of 10-0. Sophomore pitcher Melanie Roe dominated the mound, which gave Johnson the shutout victory to end the game before the fifth inning (mercy rule for softball states that if a team if up by 10 runs at the end of the fourth inning, they win and the game is over).
The softball team will take this win into its 10-5 record overall and will start its district record with an optimistic 1-0. The Jags take on Madison next Tuesday at 7pm at BAC-West field. The Mavericks stand with an 11-5 record overall and have yet to start district play.
