Joseph Gordon-Levitt continues to prove he’s one of the best actors around, and Bruce Willis proves he’s more than relevant in Looper.
Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Looper is based in 2044 in a futuristic society fallen into a great depression. To make a living Joe (Levitt) becomes a looper. A looper is a person who kills another person sent back in time by the mob and at the end of every hit the loopers are given a nice reward. But there’s a catch, after about thirty years, the mob will find loopers from the past and send them back in time to be killed by there own selves. And those who do not fulfill the act of killing their future selves, never get to become their future selves. One day old Joe (Willis) is sent back only to escape his younger self.
This is the pinnacle of why people go to see movies in the first place -to be entertained and messed with. And the film is fantastic. There is really no fat to trim, each actor gives some of the best performances of there career. Most notably is Emily Blunt who really proves herself to go beyond the normal and develops a human being, not just a movie character. But praise can’t be over-looked in Levitt, who put a mold over his face so that there would be more similarity between him and Willis. And Levitt just puts forth every ounce of soul he has into this film and he never loses touch with anyone. And of course, who could forget Willis who’s been proving for twenty years that he’s more than just an action actor but someone who can evoke emotion. This movie blows my mind because I was rooting for everyone simultaneously and it’s safe to say that I’ve never done that in a movie before.
I can’t really say anything bad about it, because there’s nothing to de-recommend the movie for. Perfect length of time to watch a movie, wonderful performances, fabulous writing and great set pieces. Looper is the best around right now.
