Boys soccer has just kicked off as the Jags look to take down the district and prove to be a top contender. The varsity boys have gotten off to an extremely hot start, still without a loss this season. Their record is 3-0-2 and they boys head to the valley tournament, and look to boost their record even more. Getting out to a quick start in soccer is key to riding that momentum for the remainder of the season.

“It feels good to be winning games at the beginning of the season, it gives all of us motivation and prepares us a little more for each and every game,” junior Devlin Gilligan said.

The varsity boys had a long season last year coming up short of any playoff contention and unable to compete closely in district. This season looks to be a different story, and although it’s early in the season, they still are showing signs of potential. The main sign of their success this season is that they won the NEISD tournament. They tied with Marshall but knocked off Victoria East and Lee, propelling them to go on and win the tournament.

“This is a great way to start our season and for our guys the tournament win motivates them mentally as well as physically. We know we have a tough road ahead of us but putting in many hours of practice should have us ready to compete,” coach Mike South said.

Playoffs are always frequently asked about at the beginning and the Jags would love to see themselves there concluding this years season. They are made up of mostly second year juniors as well as a handful of seniors with a lot of potential. Come April, they want to be heading towards their first playoff game in school history. All of the experience will help them throughout the season; also creating good chemistry with each other.

“Our main goal this season is to win district also get a playoff spot, it’s a lot easier to be a returning junior on varsity knowing what’s to come and what to expect,” Gilligan said.
