Johnson softball opened up their district schedule with a 10-0 victory over MacArthur on March 1. Senior Melanie Roe led the way by pitching six scoreless innings while striking out five batters.

The team also lost to Smithson Valley 8-4 on March 5, which snapped their streak of 8 games without a loss and causes them to fall to 11-5-1(1-0).

“This season got off to a slow start, but we are playing a lot better and has been good so far,” Roe said.

The win against MacArthur in the district opener gives the team a 1-0 record in district and momentum heading into the rest of their district schedule.

“We have the potential to be a very good team this year,” freshman Kylie Rittiman said.

Many players believe this year’s team has more potential than last year’s team.

“We definitely have better potential than last year because we have good chemistry and are a good group of friends this year,” Roe said.

This year’s team believes it has a chance to reach the ultimate goal of making it to states.

“We are definitely aiming to make it to states this year,” Rittiman said, “we have the possibility to at least be close to reaching that goal.”

Next up for the Jags is a game against Churchill on March 8.

“We are practicing very hard to stay in game shape and prepare for all of our games,” Roe said.
