Last weekend, the Johnson boys wrestling team won first place in District 29. The Jags dominated over Churchill and Reagan with an astounding 187 points for the whole team.
“We kicked butt,” senior Steven Jayme said. “We did what we had to do to defend our title.”
Jayme took the gold medal for his weight class (160 lb.).
“I did pretty darn good,” Jayme said. “I trained really hard the whole week. Coach Miller’s workouts are really hard and I just went as hard as I could. I got out of my comfort zone I guess.”
Jeremy Water (112lb), Reagan Powell (125), Ryan Noland (135), Tommy Stringfellow (180), Marvin Smith (215), and Gabe Donias (285) took home silver medals for the Jags.
“I did pretty good,” senior Tommy Stringfellow said. “I did a lot better than I thought I would.”
Zack Gerner (145lb) and Connor Wagstaff (189) received bronze medals in the competition.
“I did alright getting third,” senior Zack Gerner said. “We did great overall.”
Senior Steven Jayme and juniors Jeremy Waters and Ryan Noland will participate in the Regional Tournament this weekend.
“We only have three regional qualifiers,” Jayme said. “And the ones that are going, we’re pretty good. I think we’ll do well.”
The Region IV tournament will be held at Blossom Athletic Center this weekend. Johnson will take on competitors from San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi, and other cities as well.
“I think we’ll perform well,” Waters said. “We’ll do better than most people think.”
