The Johnson baseball and softball teams have been exceeding expectations and tearing it up this spring season. Last year, the softball team didn’t make it past round one of playoffs, and baseball didn’t make playoffs at all. But this year, they’re in it to win it.
The Lady Jags continued to dominate the diamond as they took out Taft last Saturday to seal up a series win. Senior Jorden Smith and junior Cosette Hernandez ran in two points for the Jags in the first inning, while sophomore pitcher Melanie Roe held the Raiders to no runs for the entire match. This Saturday the team takes on the Southwest Dragons; district 28 champions.
“We feel confident that we’ll do our best,” Roe said. “We’ve been working hard this week, so we’re hoping it will pay off Saturday.”
The baseball team is moving on to the second round of playoffs this Saturday as well. Last weekend, the team had a comeback series win against San Marcos, and now they’re set to take on Corpus Christi Carroll. Carroll, with their undefeated district record, are also district 28 champions.
“We just need to win; that’s all that’s on our minds,” junior pitcher Matt Chapa said. “[Carroll] won state last year, so we’re just going to have to play our absolute best.”
