Almost 20 years have passed since Tobey Maguire first put on the mask, and sadly the day might never come to an end. On Dec. 17, Spider-Man: No Way Home will hit theaters, causing an overcrowding of young kids looking for excitement, and 40 year-old geeks hoping to relive the same memories the children sitting beside them will experience. With big names like Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina, and Willem Dafoe returning as their original Spiderman characters, and leaks of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire making a stop of their own in this long anticipated event, the only people who aren’t going to have any sort of interest in this movie either already gave up on cinema or live under a rock: there is no in between.
In case one forgot, nine Spiderman movies have been released in the last 18 years; all four adaptations released by different corporations, Sony Pictures, Sony Pictures, Sony Pictures, and Sony Pictures. It was not until Feb. of 2015 that Marvel Studios and Sony reached a deal to share the film rights for Spider-Man, integrating the character into the established Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU. Just recently Sony announced the release of a new Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: great. This leaves people wondering, how much money is Sony Pictures earning off the average Joe? They have collectively grossed over $6.3 billion at the global box office, with Far From Home becoming the first Spider-Man film to gross over $1 billion worldwide as well as Sony’s highest-grossing film ever. Although six billion might not seem like much to a common person, for reference, six million seconds gives one 69 and a half days, six billion seconds averages out at about 190 years. Sony is and will continue to milk their Spiderman idea dry: or until their audience runs out of money. No Way Home is nothing more than a corporate scheme that helps big companies like Sony make more and more money, while all other chumps lose more and more money. The only thing the cows win is an adrenaline rush, which they will experience at an extreme level once they go bankrupt.
The dissenting opinion still remains, life is meaningless; therefore if spending one’s “freetime” on something as trivial as watching three men in spandex suits brings you happiness, who am I to deprive one of their constitutional rights? Ignorance is bliss, and if being ignorant brings one joy: well that is not exactly a good thing. If one lives life with no balance between their id and their superego what’s to come of our society? What happened to George Orwell, Mary Shelley, and Fyodor Dostoevsky: did they die in vain? Will their cautionary ideas about the humans lack of self control turn into the same dirt their authors transmuted into?
Stan Lee wrote his Marvel Comics with a mind set of making children happy, by giving them role models to help them through the war. His ideas are now twisted into emotional roller coasters in order to reach the ultimate goal: make money.
Next time you think about watching a movie for short term dopamine rushes, they should also consider that although society can put ideas into one’s head, the person controls the mind.
